Marie Lu's deput novel, Legend made my back hurt.
Why?
I didn't want to move from my spot on my bed. Moving ment putting down this book and I was not going to risk that.
As a rule, I'm ify on YA dystopia. I've only read not even a hand full before (The Hunger Games trilogy and Fahrenheit 451) that I really loved. Most, in my humble opinion, fall short.
Summary (from Goodreads) -
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias' death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills.
And thrills it gave!
Right from the first page, readers are pulled into June and Day's world. Both main characters were great - I enjoyed reading from both of their POVs. Unlike with some other YA books, Day really sounded like a teenage boy. We got to know the characters and because of that, we understood their actions.
Day would do anything for his family and June would do anything to get her brother's killer.
That's another thing I loved about this book; family played a big role. You don't see that much in YA today.
The romance: I see it at a crush-level right now. And they weren't on each other's thoughts all the freaking time (another thing I hate in YA) and with two more books, I think it can become real love.
Elle's Rating: 5/5
